How to Convert SRT to VTT

Step 1. Upload your SRT file. Click on 'Choose Subtitle File’ and select your SRT file from your folders or library. 

Step 2. Convert. Once your file is uploaded, click on Options. Choose VTT from the dropdown. DoneTools will automatically convert your SRT file into VTT.

SRT or VTT - Which Subtitle Format to Use

SRT is short for SubRip Subtitle Format. It got its name from a DVD-ripping program that was used to extract the subtitles and their timings from DVDs and other types of videos. 

Caption files previously used XML-code, which made them fairly clunky until some clever people invented SRT. The world requires an easier solution! As a result, the SRT file format was created.

SRT files are compatible with a variety of platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Wistia, YouTube, and Vimeo. It’s pretty much a universal subtitle format.

How to Open an SRT File?

You can use the text editors Notepad or Wordpad to open your SRT file. You can do this by selecting Open with from the context menu when you right-click the file and then choosing one of these editors from the list.

VTT stands for Web Video Text Tracks, so you may also see it named WebVTT. It’s the same thing. In light of this, VTT was developed by the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group and designed to work with HTML5 functionalities.

What features does HTML5 support? It means that you can style the fonts, move them around the video, and pretty much edit the subtitles in any way you like. 

VTT is much like SRT, only with more editing and styling options.  That means it plays well with most video players but not all social media platforms. Also, VTT contains metadata. That’s all that information about the title, author, and the like.
